Legislation drafted that would permit drone detection technology at public events.
Bipartisan representatives recently introduced legislation to the House, proposing to expand governmental authority over drone detection technology to assess potential drone threats.
The National Football League and Major League Baseball joined other organizations in sending a letter to Congress on June 5, expressing concern over the unregulated use of drones at airports and sporting events. The letter stated that without the ability to assess which drones are used by fans or by potentially dangerous individuals, public gatherings “are at substantial risk from malicious and unauthorized (drone) operation.”
Representative Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, one of the authors of the legislation, said, “We really have not enough legislation that protects the American people from really catastrophic effects of a drone strike.” She added that presidential inaugurations and Olympic events also draw an extensive use of drones.
